‘THE SUNLIGHT OF HUMANITY’: DUDJOM RINPOCHE YANGSI’S PASSING AND NEW ‘ASPIRATION FOR HIS SWIFT RE-BIRTH’ BY 17TH GYALWANG KARMAPA

“Kye Ma Kye Hu!
In the heart’s centre in the middle of Copper-Colored Mountain Mansion
Sole father, Padmasambhava abiding in union with consort, think of us!

Carried away by forceful gales of exhausted merit and negative karma,
Look upon your helpless disciples in this dreadful state.
Place of refuge, like the heart in one’s chest having departed
Look upon your followers whose hope for the present and future has been shattered!

This translation and post is my own offering in relation to the young Dudjom Rinpoche, Pema Shepa Dorje Yangsi’s suddenly passing away on 13^th Feburary 2022. Although I never met him, I had recently been asked to do some work connected to the Dusjom Tersar and last month, published some of research and a first translation of the former Dudjom Rinpoche’s outline of his Thob-Yig (Record of Received Transmission), see here.

It is tragic to lose one’s precious teacher (especially at such a young age) and letters of condolences have been offered globally by Tibetan Buddhist teachers and his followers on social media.  The causes or reasons for his death are currently unknown/unannounced.

BIOGRAPHY – GRANDSON OF DUDJOM RINPOCHE WHO WAS BORN IN TIBET

According to his biographers, Dudjom Sangye Pema Shepa was born in 1990 in Jyekundo in Kham, Eastern Tibet (Yuesue County of Qinghai Province in China), as the grandson of Dudjom Rinpoche. His father was Dola Tulku Jigme Chökyi Nyima Rinpoche, Dudjom Rinpoche’s own son (and younger brother of Thinley Norbu Rinpoche). His mother was Pema Khandro.  Oral stories recount that before the previous Dudjom Rinpoche passed away, he mentioned that: “I will go to China, and I will be reborn into my own family.” He was reborn exactly as predicted. 

RECOGNITION IN TIBET BY KHANDRO TARE LHAMO AND IN NEPAL BY JADREL RINPOCHE

In Tibet, Dudjom Sangye Pema Shepa Rinpoche was first recognized as the tulku of Dudjom Rinpoche by the great tertön  and practitioner, Khandro Tare Lhamo. The prophecy came to her in poems of dakini scripts, which she translated into Tibetan. Later on, Dudjom Sangye Pema Shepa Rinpoche was also recognized as a tulku of Dudjom Rinpoche by Khenpo Jikme Phuntsok and Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche.

In Nepal, Dudjom Sangye Pema Shepa was also recognized as an incarnation of Dudjom Rinpoche by Chadral Rinpoche, Thinley Norbu Rinpoche and Minling Trichen Rinpoche. 

THE 17th KARMAPA’S NEW SUPPLICATION FOR HIS SWIFT RE-BIRTH

On the 19^th February 2022, a few days after Dudjom Rinpoche’s passing, and when it was publicly announced, the 17^th Karmapa composed and published a heartfelt and moving Supplication for his swift re-birth, which he writes was done at the urging of the Swiss lama, Namkha Rinpoche ( I think it maybe this teacher here, who was imprisoned several times in Tibet before fleeing for exile). 

This activity is following in the footsteps of his predecessor, the 16th Karmapa, who not only had a close and good connection with the previous Dudjom Rinpoche but also composed some letters to him (contained in his Collected Works) one of which is entitled: Letter to Supreme Lord Dudjom Rinpoche about the Unmatched Life of the ‘Earlier Translation’ Teachings (sNga ‘gyur bstan pa’i srog shing mtshungs zla ma mchis pa skyabs rje bdud ‘joms rin po che mchog stsal ba’i bka’ yig/) p. 97.

The Supplication verses invoke the metaphor of the sun and sunlight, a theme which is prevalent these days in HH’s recent compositions of a painting and new sadhana and Praises for Marici, see here and here. The verses are strongly emotive too, using the Tibetan word ‘tor’ several times, which means to be shattered, dispersed or destroyed and the metaphor of strong gales/winds. After the supplication, the Karmapa also mentions the lineages and teachings Dudjom Rinpoche held, such as the Dudjom Tersar and Dzogchen teachings, as well as his teacher the ‘yogi Jadrel Sangye Rinpoche.

As the verses have not been translated into English, for the benefit of others who would like to read and understand them, I have translated the verses and the colophon. Apologies for any errors! It can be downloaded with this Introduction as a pdf. here.

As one close student of Dudjom Rinpoche said to me after his passing, it is important that the Dudjom Tersar and activities are continued and accomplished as he wished! I offer this translation and short article for that purpose, and may his re-birth swiftly arise, like the warm sun on a cold day.

Supplication for the Swift Rebirth of  Dudjom Pedma Shedpa Rinpoche by HH 17^th Gyelwang Karmapa

ཀྱེ་མ་ཀྱེ་ཧུད།

སྙིང་དབུས་ཟངས་མདོག་དཔལ་རིའི་ཕོ་བྲང་གི་དབུས་སུ། །

ཕ་གཅིག་པདྨ་འབྱུང་གནས་ཡབ་ཡུམ་དེ་མཁྱེན་ནོ། །

བསོད་ཟད་ལས་ངན་དྲག་པོའི་རླུང་ཤུགས་ཀྱིས་འཁྱེར་ཏེ། །

མགོན་མེད་ཉམ་ཐག་གྱུར་པའི་སློབ་འབངས་ལ་གཟིགས་དང་། །

Carried away by forceful gales of exhausted merit and negative karma,

Look upon your helpless disciples in this dreadful state.

 

སྤྱི་བོ་བདེ་ཆེན་འཁོར་ལོའི་གཙུག་རྒྱན་དུ་བཞུགས་པའི། །

ཁྲག་འཐུང་བདུད་འཇོམས་གླིང་པ་ཡབ་སྲས་དེ་མཁྱེན་ནོ། །

At the forehead chakra of great bliss, residing as crown adornment

Blood-drinker (Dragthung) Dudjom Lingpa, father and siblings. Think of us!

 

ཁོང་པའི་སྙིང་དང་འདྲ་བའི་སྐྱབས་གནས་ཀྱིས་བོར་ནས། །

འདི་ཕྱིའི་རེ་བ་སྟོར་བའི་རྗེས་འཇུག་ལ་གཟིགས་དང་། །

Abode of refuge, like the heart in my chest, has departed

Look upon your followers whose hope for the present and future has been shattered!

 

སྐྱབས་གཅིག་པདྨ་བཞད་པའི་ངོ་མཚར་གྱི་བཀོད་པ། །

ད་ལྟ་མིག་གི་དབང་པོའི་སྤྱོད་ཡུལ་ལས་འདས་ཏེ། །

གསུང་སྙན་རྣ་བར་ཐོས་པའི་སྐལ་བཟང་ཡང་མེད་པས། །

དབང་པོ་སྒོ་ལྔ་འཛོམས་པའི་དོན་གོ་ཡང་སྟོར་སོང་། །

Sole refuge, miraculous display Pema Shedpa

Now has gone beyond the eye power’s sight.

Also, without the excellent fortune of hearing ear-pleasing speech,

The purpose of the combined five sense powers (doors) has been shattered!

 

དམུ་རྒོད་གློ་བ་རེངས་པའི་སྙིགས་དུས་ཀྱི་སེམས་ཅན། །

མ་དད་ལོག་རྟོག་དྲི་མས་ཕྱི་ནང་ཀུན་སྒྲིབ་ཀྱང་། །

སྤྱོད་ངན་བུ་ཚ་བྱམས་པའི་ཕ་མ་ཡིས་སྐྱོང་ལྟར། །

ཐུགས་རྗེའི་གཏེར་ཆེན་ཁྱེད་ལ་མི་རེ་ནི་ཀ་མེད། །

Sentient beings of this degenerate time whose minds are wild and dull,

Stained by faithless, wrong views that obscure inside and out.

Like a parent who nurtures their misbehaved child with affection,

Great treasure of compassion, there is no other hope than you!

 

ཀ་དག་ཆོས་སྐུའི་ཀློང་ནས་འགག་མེད་ཀྱི་གཟུགས་སྐུར། །

སེམས་ཀྱི་སྐད་ཅིག་གཅིག་ལ་གཞིར་བཞེངས་སུ་མཛད་ནས། །

མ་ལུས་འགྲོ་བའི་ཁམས་རྣམས་སྨིན་གྲོལ་དུ་མཛད་པའི། །

སྤྲུལ་པའི་ཉི་གཞོན་གསར་པ་ཐོགས་མེད་དུ་བྱོན་ཤོག །

From the pristine pure expanse of Dharmakaya, the unimpeded Rupakaya (Tulku)

In a single mental instant, manifests and takes form on the ground.

Ripen and liberate all the realms of wanderers without remainder,

May the appearance of a fresh, new sun, unobstructedly arrive!

 

ཨེ་ཀ་ཛ་ཏི་ལ་སོགས་དམ་ལྡན་གྱི་སྲུང་མ། །

ད་ནི་ལེ་ལོ་བཏང་སྙོམས་ཅུང་ཟད་ཀྱང་མེད་པར། །

སྔོན་ནས་བསུ་ཞིང་རྒྱབ་ནས་སྐྱེལ་མ་ཞིག་མཛད་དེ། །

མི་ཡི་ཉི་མ་ཞིང་འདིར་གདན་འདྲེན་ལ་ཕེབས་ཤིག །

Ekajati and protectors of those with samaya,

Now, without any slight laziness or indifference

Welcome from the front and dispatch from behind, and

Invite the sunlight of humanity to come here!

བསྟན་འགྲོའི་མགོན་དཔུང་མཚུངས་མེད་༧སྐྱབས་རྗེ་བདུད་འཇོམས་རིན་པོ་ཆེའི་ཡང་སྤྲུལ་པདྨ་བཞད་པ་གང་ཉིད་གློ་བུར་དུ་དགོངས་པ་རྫོགས་པའི་གནས་ཚུལ་དེ་ནི་བསམ་ཡུལ་ལས་འདས།

འདྲེན་མཆོག་གང་ཉིད་སྐུ་ན་གཞོན་ནུར་གྱུར་ཀྱང་གངས་ཅན་ལྗོངས་དང་། རྒྱ་བལ་འབྲུག་གསུམ་སོགས་སུ་བསྟན་འགྲོའི་དོན་དཔག་མེད་མཛད་ཅིང་། སྙིགས་དུས་ཀྱི་རྫོགས་པ་ཆེན་པོའི་རྣལ་འབྱོར་པ་བྱ་བྲལ་སངས་རྒྱས་རྡོ་རྗེ་སོགས་བླ་མར་བསྟེན། སྙིང་པོ་དོན་བརྒྱུད་ཀྱི་བསྟན་པ་ཚུལ་བཞིན་དུ་བསྐྱངས་ནས། བོད་བརྒྱུད་ནང་བསྟན་སྤྱི་དང་། བྱེ་བྲག་འོད་གསལ་རྫོགས་པ་ཆེན་པོའི་རིང་ལུགས། ལྷག་པར་བདུད་འཇོམས་ཀྱི་གཏེར་རྒྱུན་འཛིན་པ་རྣམས་ཀྱི་འདྲེན་པ་ཆེན་པོར་འགྱུར་བར་ངེས་མོད། དུས་ངན་སྙིགས་མར་གྱུར་པ་དང་། གདུལ་བྱའི་བསོད་ནམས་དམན་པའི་སྟོབས་ཀྱིས་བཻཌཱུརྱའི་བུམ་པ་ལག་ནས་ཤོར་བ་ལྟ་བུར་གྱུར་ཀྱང་། རྒྱལ་སྲས་སེམས་དཔའ་རྣམས་ཀྱི་ཐུགས་རྗེ་དུས་ལས་མི་གཡོལ་བ་ཡིན་པས། རང་གཞན་ཐམས་ཅད་ཀྱིས་གདུང་ཤུགས་དྲག་པོས་ཡང་སྲིད་སྤྲུལ་པའི་སྐུ་རྩོད་མེད་ཅིག་གནམ་ནས་བྱ་འབབ་པ་ལྟར་འབྱོན་པའི་གསོལ་བ་རྩེ་གཅིག་ཏུ་འདེབས་པ་གལ་ཆེའོ། །

The incomparable protector, Kyabje Dudjom Rinpoche tulku Pema Shepa who suddenly passed away. Supreme guide also with young body. Infinite activities for the benefit of beings and teachings in Tibet and the three places of India, Nepal and Bhutan . Who served teachers such as the yogi, Jadrel Sangye Dorje of the great Dzogpachenpo of the degenerate age. Protector of the way of the lineage teachings of Essential Purpose (Nyingpo Don), the Tibet lineage of the teachings, inner and outer. In particular, the tradition of Osel Dzogpachenpo (Luminous Clarity of Dzogpachenpo). Moreover, he was also the holder and great guide of the Dudjom Treasure (Tersar). However, due to the force of degenerate, negative times and the lack of merit of disciples, like dropping a Baidurya vase , (his form) has shattered. However, since the compassion of Bodhisattvas is undeceiving during these times, it is very important for oneself and others, with intense longing,  to supplicate one-pointedly for a undisputed incarnate (tulku) to descend again.

གོང་གི་གསོལ་འདེབས་འདི་ཡང་སུད་སི་ནམ་མཁའ་རིན་པོ་ཆེས་གདུང་ཤུགས་ཀྱིས་བསྐུལ་མ་མཛད་པ་དང་། རང་ངོས་ནས་ཀྱང་དད་འདུན་རྩེ་གཅིག་པས་གསོལ་བ་བཏབ་པ་ཡིན་ནོ། །དཔལ་ཀརྨ་པའི་མཚན་འཛིན། ཨོ་རྒྱན་ཕྲིན་ལས་སུ་འབོད་པས་སྤྱི་ལོ་ ༢༠༢༢ ཟླ་ ༢ ཚེས་ ༡༩ ལ་ཕུལ།

This supplication prayer was composed after Namkha Rinpoche from Switzerland with intense longing, encouraged me, and with one-pointed faith it was created. Offered by the one who merely holds the name of H.H. 17th Karmapa, Orgyen Thinley, on February 19th of 2022.
