‘Innate Kālacakra’ Translation Project

The aim of this project is to translate from Tibetan into English the sections from the three main Jonang tradition commentaries (1) The Chariot that Transports to the Four Kayas by Bamda Gelek Gyatso, 2) Meaningful to See and 3) One Hundred Blazing Lights by Jetsun Tāranātha on the Innate Kālacakra, including research on Innate Kālacakra in other lineages, as well as include translations of key Innate Kālacakra sadhana and lineage supplication texts by Tāranātha and Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Thaye. I also hope to do some research on the history and lineage of the Innate Kālacakra practise as part of an Introduction. The project will culminate in the publication of a booklet on Innate Kālacakra (with restricted access to those with the requisite empowerment and transmission).

In November 2018, the project proposal was awarded an Ashoka Translation Grant by the Khyentse Foundation (for more information about that see here). The work is also co- sponsored by a private donor. The sponsorship is to cover living and travel expenses in India and Nepal while doing the translation work.

The project aims to preserve and uphold not only the Jonang lineage tradition teachings and practises, but also the Kālacakra lineage it is part of. It will be of interest to Buddhists who are practising or interested in Kālacakra and/or Jonang. Teachers will be able to teach and propagate Kālacakra teachings around the world in a more effective and easier way, and students will be able to read about them in more detail. It  will also enable people to translate these specific texts into other languages.
