“In Tibet, the melodious singing of spring begins”. བོད་ན་དཔྱིད་བྱས་སྙན་འགྱུར་འཐེན་འགོ་ཚུགས།

Introduction

Yesterday 18th March, according to the Palpung Sherab Ling Kālacakra 2026 -27 diary,  was the first day of the third lunar month, the first day of the sacred and auspicious Vesak/Vaisakh month, that commemorates several significant commemorative dates in the Shakyamuni Buddha’s life, his birth, first teaching and passing away. Depending on where one is though, and the calendar tradition, the full moon day of Vesak month is 30 April (India, Myanmar), 30 May (Sri Lanka), 31 May (Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore).

I have written about Saga Dawa here before and my visit to this sacred pilgrimage site in Taiwan 2025, during last year’s Saga Dawa month.

In the Sherab Ling diary there is an interesting astrological explanation of the third Vaisakh month, which I have translated into English here:

“With the arrival of the master of light in the constellation Aries,
The inner experiences the transition of spring to summer, with the spleen meridian active in the earth element.
Welcoming the beginning of the southern and northern, summer and winter seasons.
The month of Saga Dawa, auspiciously coinciding with three of the Buddha’s great deeds.”

In this month, according to the basic calculation of the Kalachakra system, the last spring month of Saga Dawa begins, also known as the first month of summer in the astrological system, and the fourth month of spring in the traditional Tibetan medical texts. According to the Mongolian calendar, this corresponds to the third Tibetan month of the current year.

From the 1st day of the month of the dragon to the 20th day of the month of the snake, the 72-day period of the fire element, the heart meridian, begins. In Tibet, the melodious singing of spring begins.

From the 5th day of the pig on the 28th day, the sun enters the Aries constellation according to the Kalachakra Tantra. The auspicious day is the 28th day of the month.

From the 28th day of the month to the 29th day of the next month, the empty vessel is in the south. From the 2nd day of the ox on the 7th day to the 5th day of the pig on the 8th day, the great birthday of the Buddha is celebrated.

From the 4th day of the bird on the 14th day to the 5th day of the bird on the 15th day, the Buddha’s enlightenment and parinirvana are celebrated.

From the 1st day of the dog on the 15th day to the 4th day of the dog on the 16th day, the black sun rises and sets from the east to the west. The constellation of Aries ends and the constellation of Taurus begins. The dog of Halha is in the northern highlands. The lord of the dragon is in the courtyard and the millstone. The path is in the northeast.

According to the pure and flawless Kalachakra Tantra system, the dates of the 5th and 29th are missing. The date of the 22nd is an extra day. According to the system of the Pu-lu, the dates of the 5th and 29th are missing. There is no extra day. The detailed planetary positions are: 06 is in the waxing phase, 5 is in the waning phase, 24 is in the phase of conflict, 13 is in the phase of decline.”
