Chotrul Duchen/Saga Dawa day
Today, is the full moon of Saga Dawa month (and a blood-red lunar eclipse) which is considered to be especially auspicious. It is also called in Tibetan, Chotrul Duchen (“Great Day of Miraculous Appearances”), which takes place on the fifteenth day of the first Tibetan lunar month. This year, it also coincides with the Hindu festival of Holi, which celebrates light overcoming darkness.
The first fifteen days of the lunar year celebrate the days during which the Buddha displayed miracles for his disciples so as to increase their devotion. During Chotrul Duchen, it is believed that the effects of both positive and negative actions are multiplied ten million times. Commemorating the anniversaries of Marpa Lotsawa and Je Milarepa
Today, the 17th Karmapa published some new praises for Milarepa, which I translated below. For the anniversary in 2024, the 17th Karmapa composed a new verse of (nine-syllable per line) poetic praise to Milarepa with a stunning painting/image of Milarepa, which seems to be based on a Palpung thanka painted by the 8th Kenting Tai Situpa, Chokyi Jungne (although it is not clearly stated). I translated the verse as an offering for the 17th Karmapa and the Karma Kagyu followers. The Karmapa then later released another verse dedicated to remembering the great Marpa Lotsawa, Je Mila’s teacher. I previously translated both the verses as an offering for the 17th Karmapa and the Karma Kagyu followers.
Also, Je Milarepa was an adamant vegetarian, singing about how killing and eating slaughtered animals is ‘an evil custom’ that should be abandoned. For my translation and overview of that song, see here. That was in the days well before mass factory farming! What would he think now, and how it is destroying the planet as well?
Today, during the evening of the ongoing Arya Kshema nuns’ event at Tergar Monastery, Bodh Gaya, the nuns will be performing a Milarepa (Ladrub), which will be led by the 17th Karmapa online.

The path of enlightenment is attained through countless eons,
ཁྱོད་ཀྱིས་ཚེ་ལུས་གཅིག་གིས་འཇལ་བའི་ཚེ། །
khyö kyi tsé lü chik gi jalwé tsé
But you accomplished it in a single lifetime and body.
ཡུན་རིང་ངལ་བ་བསྟེན་པའི་རྒྱལ་སྲས་རྣམས། །
yün ring ngalwa tenpé gyalsé nam
The victorious sons who have long relied on perseverance
ཐེག་པ་ཆེ་ལས་ངེས་པར་འབྱུང་དུ་དོགས། །
tekpa ché lé ngepar jung du dok
Who are hesitant about the definitive emergence from the Mahayana vehicle.
རྗེ་བཙུན་མཁའ་ལྡིང་དབང་པོ་ཁྱེད་བྱོན་པས། །
jetsün khading wangpo khyé jönpé
Jetsun, master of space, with your arrival,

sa la womin shying gi temo jin
Bestowing the spectacle of the Akanishta realm upon the earth.
མགོན་ཁྱོད་ད་ལྟ་ཞིང་ཁམས་རྒྱ་མཚོ་རུ། །
gön khyö danta shyingkham gyatso ru
Although you, protector, now display
མ་ངེས་སྐུ་ཡི་བཀོད་པ་བསྟན་གྱུར་ཀྱང་། །
ma ngé ku yi köpa ten gyur kyang
Uncertain manifestations of your form in an ocean of realms,
ཕྱོགས་འདིར་ཐུགས་བརྩེའི་གཟིགས་པ་ལྷོད་མེད་ཀྱིས། །
chok dir tuk tsé zikpa lhömé kyi
With unwavering loving compassion,

Please guide us inseparably in our garland of rebirths.

རྗེ་འགྲན་གྱིས་དོ་མེད་རྡོ་རྗེ་འཆང་། ། སྐྱབས་གནས་ཀྱི་མཐར་ཐུག་འགྲོ་བའི་མགོན། །
jé dren gyi domé dorjé chang/ kyabné kyi tartuk drowé gön/
The Lord who is unmatched, the Vajradhara, The ultimate refuge, protector of beings,
དཔལ་སྐྱེས་མཆོག་མར་པ་ལོ་ཙཱ་དེ། ། དུས་དེ་རིང་སྙིང་ཁོང་གཏིང་ནས་དྲན། །
pal kyechok marpa lo tsa dé/ dü dering nying khong tingné dren/
Glorious Marpa Lotsawa, Today, I remember you from the depths of my heart.

né sé khar trulpé podrang du/ yum kadrinchen gyi dakmema/
In the manifested palace of Sekhar, With the kind consort, Dagmema,
སྲས་སྙན་བརྒྱུད་འཛིན་པའི་གྲུབ་ཆེན་བཅས། །དུས་ད་ལྟ་མཇལ་ན་དགའ་བ་ལ། །
sé nyengyü dzinpé drubchen ché/ dü danta jal na gawa la/
And the great accomplished sons who hold the lineage. How wonderful t’would be to meet them now.
རྗེ་ཁྱོད་ཀྱི་ཐུགས་བསྐྱེད་ཕྲིན་ལས་ཀྱིས། །བོད་མུན་པས་འཐུམ་པའི་རྒྱལ་ཁམས་འདིར། །
jé khyö kyi tukkyé trinlé kyi/ bö münpé tumpé gyalkham dir/
Through your aspirations and deeds, In this Tibetan kingdom shrouded in darkness,
ཆོས་སྒྲུབ་བརྒྱུད་བསྟན་པའི་ཉི་མ་ཤར། །ཚེ་གཅིག་གིས་ཟུང་འཇུག་རྒྱལ་ས་བསྐྲུན། །
chö drubgyü tenpé nyima shar/ tsé chik gi zungjuk gyalsa trün/
The sun of the Kagyu teachings arose, In one lifetime, you established the kingdom of union.
བོད་གངས་ཅན་ལྗོངས་ཀྱི་གྲུབ་པའི་མཆོག །མཚན་མི་ལ་བཞད་པའི་རྡོ་རྗེ་ཞེས། །
bö gangchen jong kyi drubpé chok/ tsen mi la shyepé dorjé zhé/
The supreme accomplished one of the Tibetan snow land, Whose name is Milarepa Shepa Dorje (the laughing Vajra)
དྲན་ཙམ་གྱིས་བློ་སྣ་འགྱུར་བ་ཡང་། །མགོན་ཁྱོད་ཀྱི་ཐུགས་ལས་མ་འཁྲུངས་སམ། །
dren tsam gyi lona gyurwa yang/ gön khyö kyi tuk lé ma trung sam/
Even the mere thought of whom transforms the mind, Was it not born from your heart, O Protector?
ཕ་བཀའ་དྲིན་མཉམ་མེད་ལྷོ་བྲག་པ། །དྲིན་འཁོར་ཐབས་མེད་པའི་བཀའ་དྲིན་ཅན། །
pa kadrin nyammé lho drakpa/ drin khor tabmé pé kadrinchen/
Father, the incomparable Lhodrakpa, Whose kindness is impossible to repay,
དཔལ་དགྱེས་མཛད་ཆེན་པོའི་བྱིན་རླབས་ཀྱིས། །རྒྱུད་ཆོས་དང་འདྲེས་པར་བྱིན་གྱིས་རློབས། །
pal gyé dzé chenpö jinlab kyi/ gyü chö dang drepar jingyi lob/
Through the blessings of the glorious Great Pleasing One, Bless us to blend our mindstream with Dharma.

Ema! Elevated on the Snowy Mount Meru of the ‘Cool Land’ [Tibet]
སྲབ་མེད་མཁའ་ལ་འཕྱོ་བའི་སེང་ཆེན་ཞིག །
sap mé kha la cho bé seng chen zhik
An unbridled great lion soars in the sky
བཤད་སྒྲུབ་གཡུ་རལ་རྒྱས་པའི་ཟིལ་རྔམ་གྱིས། །
shé drup yu rel gyé pé zil ngam gyi
Whose brilliant, extensive turquoise mane of knowledge and accomplishments
ཐུབ་བསྟན་ས་ཆེན་བསྲུང་བ་ཁྱོད་ཉིད་དྲན། །
thubten sa chen sungwa khyö nyi dren
Protects a great level of the Sage’s teachings, I remember you.
