ཀ་དག་རང་ཉམས་ངང་ལས་ཚམ་ངམ་ཅན། ཁ་ལ་ངན་པ་མཐའ་དག་བཏབ་ན་ཡང་།
ག་དག་གཞན་ཕན་ས་ལ་རབ་གནས་པ། ང་ཅག་ཕན་མཛད་མ་ལ་དད་པ་འཆའ།
“From the state of primordial purity and natural experience, even if negative/bad words are always spoken, the completely pure one abides in the realm of benefiting others. We place faith in the lady who benefits!”
Today, on the 29th December 2024, the Dharma Protector Day, I offer a new (and first) translation of the Roar of the All-Conquering Divine Drum Praise to the Karmapa’s personal Dharma protector, Palden Lhamo Rangjung Gyalmo, which the 17th Karmapa composed at a young age in 2004, a few years after he left Tibet for India when he was only 19 years old.
I saw this Praise several times, and always made a mental note to translate it at some point as I feel very much connected to this female protector, often in union with Black-cloaked Mahakala on a horse. Now seemed to be the right time and place to do it. I received the empowerment of this protector at Ralang Monastery, Sikkim in 2019 from HE 12th Gyaltsab Rinpoche’s KNOWING ONE LIBERATES ALL: Compilation of deities by 9th Karmapa and Kālacakra in Karma Kagyu.

ཅ་ག་རབ་མཚར་ཞལ་ཟས་བདའ་བ་དང་། ཆ་ངག་ནམ་ཡང་མཉན་པར་གདས་པས་ན།
ཇ་ཆང་ལས་འདས་ཐར་ལམ་བཟང་བ་དག ཉ་ར་མཛད་ནས་ལས་ལ་ཆ་བར་འཚལ།
Always enjoying delicious and wonderful nourishment, and constantly listening to sacred teachings,
Having transcended tea and alcohol, devote oneself to the practice that leads to the excellent path of liberation!
ཏ་ཐཱ་ག་ཏས་གནའ་ནས་དམ་བཞག་པས། ཐ་ཆད་བསད་ནས་དམ་པ་རངས་པར་མཛད།
ད་ཆར་བསམ་པས་བར་ཆད་ཐམས་ཅད་དང་། ན་ཚས་འཐམ་པ་དག་ལས་ཐར་བར་མཛད།
As the Tathagata long ago made a commitment, she slays the wicked and brings joy to the sacred ones.
Now, through contemplation, she liberates us from all obstacles and the entanglements of illness and aging.
པ་སངས་མ་མགལ་རཀ་ཏས་བཀང་བ་བཅས། ཕ་ག་ཆད་པ་ལ་གནས་གཞན་དག་ན།
བ་གམ་གཞལ་ཡས་ཁང་བཟང་ཚར་དངར་བར། མ་ཕམ་མཛངས་མར་གསལ་བ་མཐའ་ཡས་མཛད།
The empty skull bowl filled with rakta, along with the severed father’s head,
In other sacred places, of beautifully adorned celestial palaces, the incomparable wise woman clearly performs boundless deeds.
ཙ་མ་ར་མཉམ་ནག་དང་ངམ་པ་ཅན། ཚ་ངད་འབར་བ་ནང་ན་བཞད་ཉམས་མ།
ཛ་རག་བཤམས་ནས་ལས་ལ་གཏད་ཙ་ན། ཝ་ཏ་ལས་དཀར་རང་ལས་གཞན་ཕན་མཛད།
When the samaya-bound ones, equal in darkness and ferocity, with blazing hot ardor,
display smiling appearances within, and are set to work with offerings, the white/virtuous one acts for the benefit of others beyond oneself.
ཞྭ་དང་དར་ཟབ་དཔལ་ལ་དབང་བ་ནས། ཟ་ཐང་དམན་ནས་བས་མཐར་གནས་པ་ཡན།
འ་ཆད་ཉམ་ཐག་ལས་ངན་ཐམས་ཅད་དང་། ཡ་ཁ་མཐའ་དག་མ་མས་བསལ་བར་འཚལ།
From a glorious dominion over hats and silk, down to the decline of sustenance and dwellings in remote places,
All the hardships and destitution of miserable karma, and all the dire straits – may the Mother clear away these difficulties!
ར་བ་ཨ་འཐས་མཚན་མ་དམ་པ་ཅན། ལ་ལས་ནམ་ཡང་དཔག་པར་རབ་དཀའ་བ།
ཤ་ཐང་ལམ་བཟང་དག་ལ་རབ་འབད་ནས། ས་ལམ་དག་པར་ཐར་བ་མཛད་པའང་འཚལ།
The enclosure is firmly established with sacred symbols AH, difficult for some to ever fathom.
By diligently traversing the excellent path of hardship, seek to attain liberation through purifying the stages and paths!
ཧ་ཅང་དད་དང་བསམ་པ་རབ་བཟང་བས། དཔལ་ལྡན་ཁྱོད་ཀྱི་ཚུལ་ཙམ་བསྟོད་པ་འདིས།
ཨ་ལམ་ལས་དཀར་པདྨ་དར་བ་དང་། ལྷ་མོ་ནག་མོ་ཁྱོད་ལྟར་བདག་གྱུར་ཅིག
Through extremely faithful and excellent contemplation, by this mere praise of a portion of your glorious nature,
Like a white lotus blossoming from the almond tree, may I become like you the dark goddess!
དཔལ་ལྡན་ལྷ་མོ་རང་བྱུང་མར་དབྱངས་ངེས་པའི་ཀ་ཕྲེང་གི་བསྟོད་པ་འདི་ཉིད་ཀྱང་དཔལ་ཀརྨ་པའི་མཚན་ལ་ཤིན་ཏུ་ཡི་དམ་དུ་བྱེད་པའི་ཨོ་རྒྱན་ཕྲིན་ལས་སུ་འབོད་པས་སྦྱར་བའོ དགེའོ ༢༠༠༤།༨།༢༢
This praise in the form of a garland of melodic verse dedicated to the glorious self-arisen goddess (Palden Lhamo Rangjung) was composed by one holding the name of the glorious Karmapa with exceptional samaya to the goddess, calling himself Orgyen Trinley. Virtue! 22nd August 2004.
