THE INFINITE WOMB OF LOVE AND LOSS: New Meditational Poem by Adele Tomlin

This new poem, The Infinite Womb of Love and Loss by Adele Tomlin, is an exploration with words, images, and sounds, the infinite ‘womb’ space of love, loss, missed connections, the lies and memories and ask whether we live with our eyes wide shut, or eyes shut yet open? Inspired by Buddhist philosophy, meditation, Kate Bush’s Sensual World, and the Buddha bliss vajra, heart-root guru.  It can be read below and downloaded as a pdf file here.
Music? Sensual World by Kate Bush, Holes by Mercury Rev (watch the video until the ‘stunning’ end), The Lady of the Flowers by Placebo, and One Red Rose I Mean by Captain Beefheart.
Written with love, passion and gratitude, Adele Tomlin, 22nd December 2024.

INFINITE WOMB OF ‘LOVE’ AND ‘LOSS’: A meditational poem
By Adele Tomlin

“It is better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all.” –Tennyson
“Do I look for those millionaires like a Machiavellian girl would, When I could wear a sunset…” –Kate Bush

When Eve was said to have tempted Adam with the
‘forbidden fruit’
How sweet were its juices?
And how bitter the lingering
After-taste?
Like a blood-red rose whose thorns
Can cut carelessness deep.
Or sweet, naughty strawberries
Whose juices stain the whitest cotton.
The subtle scent of  a cherry blossom spring
Gradually falling, decaying and withering.
Like the heavy musk of
Scarlet menses bleeding,
A source of life, food, a baby’s cry
Becomes a stench of birth and pain,
“Happy and bleeding for you”
Sang PJ Harvey,
A womb of scarlet blood,
A kiss from a rose,
a mother’s lot.

There is a mental ‘secret’ space
Full of imagination and possibilities
In a split-second, a door opens and a view and horizon reveals itself,
A choice within the infinite choice of
Endless, vivid yet empty appearances.
That can suddenly, or even slowly, be closed shut
By obstacles, hindrances
Fear, shyness, mistrust, karma, aversion,
Lack of LOVE.

Without wisdom,
within that empty ‘opened’ yet ‘shut’ space,
Lies the ‘heartbroken’ graves of millions of
Lost loves, lost opportunities
Missed connections, unwritten texts.
A silent sobbing regret, or a howling roar of grief.
Those aching words “if only….”
Words left UNSPOKEN but a lingering
Felt, sensed LOSS.

That Eleanor Rigby melancholy melody,
“I look at all the lonely people”,
A  ‘heart’ whisper again and again
“Sometimes one has to risk it all
To live and love
Well and WISE”.

Streisand sang: “Memories may be beautiful and yet….
“what’s too painful to remember, we simply choose to forget.”
But do we ever forget? or do we transform them into
Lies we can live with?
Sinatra sang: “I did it my way.” But did we?
Did we keep our eyes wide  SHUT,
Or shut yet wide OPEN?
“Therein lies the rub.”
