NEW TRANSLATION: The categories and meaning of the hundred syllable Heruka Vajrasattava mantra in the Dro Kālacakra tradition

In two of the main texts on the Kālacakra practices within the Jonang Dro Kālacakra tradition (‘A Hundred Blazing Lights’ by Tāranātha and ‘The Chariot that Transports to the Four Kāyas’ by Bamda Gelek Gyatso) the categories and meaning of the hundred syllable (yig brgya) mantra are explained in detail.

Translated and published in English online here for the first time, Tāranātha gives an explanation of the category termed the ‘hundred syllable’ mantra and the two main categories of the Vajrasattva one hundred syllable practice, peaceful and wrathful. The wrathful Heruka Vajrasattva mantra is practised in the preliminaries of the Dro Kālacakra tradition and the mantra is slightly different from the peaceful mantra. Tāranātha also explains some of the other Vajrasattva visualisations that had developed in Tibet at that time. Then, in a excerpt from ‘The Chariot that Transports to the Four Kayas’, Bamda Gelek Gyamtso gives an extended explanation of the meaning of the wrathful Vajra Heruka one hundred syllable mantra.

To conclude, there is a recording of the correct Sanskrit pronunication of the long peaceful mantra by HH 17th Karmapa, Orgyen Trinley Dorje and the wrathful heruka mantra by HH Sakya Trizin.
