“HŪṂ
In the northwest of Uddiyana
Upon the stem of a lotus
You achieved the wondrous supreme siddhi
And are renowned as the Lotus Born
Encircled by many ḍākinis
We practice following your example
We ask you come and grant your blessings
GURU PADMA SIDDHI HŪṂ” —seven-line supplication to Guru Padmasambhava
As another offering for Guru Padmasambhava day today, here is a video I created of the 17th Gyalwang Karmapa teaching in 2016 on the seven-line supplication to Guru Padmasambhava.
I recite this supplication daily, and it contains the Guru Padmasambhava mantra. The 17th Karmapa first shares an interesting story about how he came to know the supplication as a young child in a nomad family in Tibet. The 17th Karmapa also explains how as a young child he was requested to recite the supplication at the request of his father to get good land in a land allocation scheme, but how he was able to stop forest fire spreading by using the supplication, when a village leader had requested him to help. This interesting anecdote was again omitted from the official Kagyu office report of the teaching! The Karmapa then gives a line by line explanation of the seven-line supplication, followed by the oral transmission.
Here is a stunning painting of Guru Padmasambhava by the 17th Karmapa, together with the seven-line supplication:

Here is the Sanskrit translation of Guru Padmasambhava 7 line prayer mantra )

Many thanks! I was not aware it was in Sanskrit, is that the translation from the Tibetan or the English? 🙂
“Sanskrit translated from Tibetan by Narayana Prasad Rijal, a Sahaayaka Dharmadhara in a Buddhist monastery in Nepal.”
