Learn Classical Tibetan I (Beginners) with scholar-translator in English in the New Year 2024!

The new year 2024 has begun and time to start some new habits and meaningful studies! Ever wanted to read Tibetan rituals and prayers in the beautiful and unusual Tibetan script itself without the need for phonetics? The script is not only used by Tibetan language speakers, but also in Sikkim, Ladakh and Bhutan. Want to learn from the comfort of your own home with a native English speaking scholar-translator? Well here is your chance!

This new Classical Tibetan course is designed to give provide the foundation for participants to read and understand Tibetan Buddhist texts in the original Tibetan script.   The reason I started to study the Tibetan script and language was to be able to read (and understand) Tibetan prayers, liturgies, meditation rituals and religious poetry, without the need for phonetics and translation. Being able to read the Tibetan script means a practitioner eventually will not have to rely on transcriptions and translations of Tibetan Buddhist material, but will be able to relate to the original material directly.

This new Beginner’s course will first lead participants in learning the symbols and sounds of the Tibetan alphabet and script, and then how words are formed and pronounced with it.  Course materials will be provided for free as part of the course fee. There are also several Tibetan language for beginners’ books which can be purchased online to supplement the course, which will be provided in a bibliography with the course materials.
