NEW TRANSLATION: ‘Supplication to Guru Rinpoche’ by 13th Karmapa

For the tenth lunar Guru Rinpoche day today, here is the first translation of a Supplication to Guru Rinpoche by the 13^th Karmapa[i], Dudul Dorje (1733-1797). He composed two prayers to Padmasambhava the second[ii] will be translated for the next Guru Rinpoche day! The 13th Karmapa had a special connection to Guru Rinpoche and was predicted by Padmasambhava (in a Nyingma terma, the ‘sPyi-lung ‘Od-kyi ITa-wa Chen’) to be the only person who could save the famous statue of Buddha in the Jo Khang Temple, Lhasa from drowning (which he did!). Supplication to Guru Rinpoche

by 13^th Karmapa

གུ་རུ་པདྨ་འབྱུང་གནས་ལ་གསོལ་བ་འདེབས་པ་བཞུགས་སོ༎

ཨོཾ་སྭ་སྟི།

ཆོས་སྐུ་སྣང་མཐའ་ལོངས་སྐུ་སྤྱན་རས་གཟིགས༎                                སྤྲུལ་སྐུ་པདྨ་འབྱུང་གནས་ཆེན་པོ་ལ༎

chöku nang tha longku chenrezig                            tulku pema jungné chenpo la

ལུས་ངག་ཡིད་གསུམ་རྟག་ཏུ་གུས་པ་ཡིས༎                                      སྙིང་ནས་གསོལ་འདེབས་བྱིན་རླབས་དངོས་གྲུབ་སྩོལ༎

lü ngak yi sum taktu güpa yi                                           nying né soldeb jinlab ngödrub tsol

Om Swasti!

To Dharmakāya, limits of appearances; Sambhogakāya, Avalokiteśvara;

Nirmanakāya, Great Padmasambhava,

With continual devotion of body, speech and mind

By this heart-felt supplication, bestow the blessings of the siddhis!

ལྷག་པར་སྙིགས་དུས་སྐྱབས་མེད་རྣམས་ཀྱིས་སྐྱབས༎                           མཚུངས་མེད་མགོན་མཆོག་གསང་གསུམ་ཡོན་ཏན་ཀུན༎

lhakpar nyig dü kyabmé nam kyi kyab                    tsungmé gön chok sang sum yönten kün

འོད་ཟེར་རྣམ་པར་སྒོ་གསུམ་བྱིན་རླབས་ཏེ༎                         བག་ཆགས་སྡིག་སྒྲིབ་ཉེར་ལྟུང་ཐམས་ཅད་བྱང་༎

özer nampar go sum jinlab té                                   bakchak dig drib nyer tung tamché jang

སྐུ་གསུམ་ལྷུན་གྲུབ་སླར་ཡང་བྱིན་རླབས་ནས༎                                  བཞི་པའི་དབང་ཐོབ་ངོ་བོ་ཉིད་སྐུ་འགྲུབ༎

ku sum lhündrub lar yang jinlab né                                  zhipé wang tob ngowo nyi ku drub

སྣང་གྲགས་རྟོགས་གསུམ་ཡེ་ཤེས་མཆོག་གི་ངང་༎                               འགྱུར་མེད་བདེ་ཆེན་དངོས་གྲུབ་མཆོག་ཐོབ་ཤོག༎

nang drak tok sum yeshe chok gi ngang                            gyurmé dechen ngödrub chok tob shok

In particular, for those of the degenerate age lacking refuge,

May the incomparable, supreme protector of the three secrets and all the qualities,

Bless our three ‘doors’ with luminous clarity,

Purifying all habitual tendencies, negative actions, obscurations and downfalls!

By the blessings of spontaneously rising up as the three kāyas,

May we accomplish the Svabhavikāya; the attainment of the four empowerments.

Within the supreme primordial awareness of the three: sights, sounds and thoughts,

May we attain the supreme siddhi of immutable, great bliss!

ཨོཾ་ཨཿ་ཧཱུཾ་བཛྲ་གུ་རུ་པདྨ་སིདྡྷི་ཧཱུཾ།

oṃ ah hūṃ vajra guru pema siddhi hūṃ

ཨོཾ་ཨཿ་ཧཱུཾ་བཛྲ་གུ་རུ་པྨ་ཐོད་ཕྲེང་རྩལ། བཛྲ་ས་མ་ཡ་ཛཿ་སིདྡྷི་ཕ་ལ་ཧཱུཾ།

oṃ ah hūṃ vajra guru pema tötreng tsal vajra samaya dza siddhi phala hūṃ   

ཞེས་བཟླའོ༎ Recite this.

ལྔ་བརྡོའི་དུས་འདིར་རྒྱལ་བ་རབ་འབྱམས་ཀྱིས༎                                ཐུགས་རྗེའི་ནུས་པ་མ་ལུས་འདུས་པའི་སྐུ༎

nga doi dü dir gyalwa rabjam kyi                                     tuk jéi nüpa malü düpé ku

རིག་འཛིན་པདྨ་འབྱུང་གནས་ཆེན་པོ་ལ༎                                       དད་གུས་གདུང་ཤུགས་དྲག་པོས་གསོལ་བཏབ་པས༎

rigdzin pema jungné chenpo la                                         dé gü dungshuk drakpö soltab pé

བདག་ཅག་ནད་གདོན་བར་ཆད་ཀུན་ཞི་ཞིང་༎                                 ཚེ་དང་བསོད་ནམས་ཡེ་ཤེས་སྣང་བ་རྒྱས༎

dakchak nedön barché kün zhi zhing                           tshé dang sönam yeshe nangwa gyé

འཕོ་འགྱུར་གཞོམ་མེད་རྡོ་རྗེ་མཆོག་གི་སྐུ༎                                      གོ་འཕང་མཆོག་ལ་ཡོངས་ཐོབ་བཀྲ་ཤིས་ཤོག༎

pho gyur zhom mé dorjé chok gi ku                         go phang chok la yong thob tashi shog

By the manifold Victors of this time of five [degenerate era],

Contained completely in a form of powerful compassion,

To the vidyadhara, great Padmasambhava, I supplicate with intense longing, devotion and faith,

May all our obstacles, interferences, sicknesses be pacified.

May the appearances of long-life, merit, and primordial awareness flourish!

May the form of the supreme, unwavering, invincible vajra, and

The supreme level be attained and all be auspicious!

[iii] This is a Sanskrit expression that the 13^th Karmapa uses quite regularly it seems at the end of his texts. It means “may it be victorious!”
